WOW, the time is flying by in 5th grade this year and I can't believe that there are only 10 school days left until Winter Break!
This week in science we have been learning about vertebrates and invertebrates. The kids created foldables, completed an interactive notebook activity, and watched several short video clips on different ways to classify organisms. They love learning about animals so this has been a really fun chapter for them!
In writing this week we have been working on our drafts of our informational pieces. The kids are so excited about what they have written so far and cannot wait to start publishing next week. We also talked about adding text features and constructed an introduction that grabs their readers attention. I am thrilled with the pieces they have been working on and can't wait to see the final draft soon.
In math we have continued working with decimals and even started dividing decimals by whole numbers. We have used two strategies so far: dividing using estimation and dividing using models. They have done very well with this. I sent home a sheet with the kids today about accessing the textbook online. This will allow you to practice at home with the kiddos if you want to and even print out activities. It is just another resource you can use if you would like!
In reading we have continued working in our nonfiction unit. We focused on author's voice and how authors use text features and word choice to voice their bias on a subject. This unit has continued to support our writing unit which has been amazing exposure of mentor texts for the kiddos.
Next week is our very last week to bring in items for adopt-a-family. Our class has brought in 70 items so far and I am hoping that we can reach at least 100 by Friday!!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and thank you for everything you do to support your child's learning. We couldn't do it without you!
